Designing the Perfect Auditorium: Acoustics, Audio, and Audience Experience
This session offers a practical look at the key elements that go into designing a well-functioning auditorium. From overall layout and seating arrangements to sightlines and stage positioning, learn how to plan spaces based on their intended use—whether for speeches, performances, or multi-purpose events. We’ll cover the fundamentals of acoustics, including reflections, diffusions, and absorption, and how these influence sound clarity and reverberation time. The session also explores how audio systems interact with room acoustics to achieve uniform sound coverage and optimal speech intelligibility. Perfect for those involved in AV design, architecture, or facility planning.
Vijay has been in the field of Audio and Acoustics since 1984. Working as a consultant for 26 years. Have completed more than 250 auditoriums of various size in India and abroad. Vijay says that in his opinion, success of any architectural design or beauty of interior aesthetics is nothing but how well it serves the purpose for which it is built for. Unfortunately, in many cases the purpose is missing. And especially when it comes to auditoriums, seminar halls or classrooms, it’s about acoustics. As written by Michael Barron: “Several auditoria exist around the world where a major world-class architect has wanted to create a great public monument, but the architecture gets in the way of an effective functioning of auditorium.”
